NOLA -> Austin Tour Recap

…and we’re back. We had a great time on our Southern tour; here’s a quick tour diary, and some coverage and video for you to feast on! There’s lots more great pictures on our friend Jori’s flickr stream.

Saturday, March 5
We marched in the Krewe of Tucks, our first Uptown NOLA Parade. Then we got drenched. Later that night, we played an awesome show at the The AllWays Lounge with our good friends Panorama Brass Band, Veveritse, Why are We Building Such a Big Ship? We played “Missy Sa Sa” that night, with Matt Moran, who wrote it, in attendance (he was playing with Panorama).

Sunday, March 6
The next day, some members of the band played with the Krewe of Eris, which unfortunately, the police shut down in a remarkable display of violence and incompetence. There are many accounts floating around, but if you’re interested, start with this one. Twelve from the Krewe of Eris were arrested, and one of our band members narrowly escaped arrest. Good thing too, because we had a show at the Hi-Ho right after the parade. After a quick discussion with the other acts, DJ Bee’s Knees, Apocalypse Five and Dime, and JP And the Gilberts, we decided to make the show into a benefit for Eris arrestees’ legal costs; here’s some video of the police misconduct.

Monday, March 7
A relatively mellow day, we drove to Lafayette, where the awesome Blake Watson gave us some free recording time, then managed to get us added to a show at the Blue Moon, where we had a blast and met three awesome Cajun dudes named Shikey, Junebug, and Smitty.

Tuesday, March 8
Of course we returned to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, jumping onto the tail end of St. Ann’s, then veering off on our own course toward the river. Adam Loudermilk, one of the HONK! TX organizers, who also plays in JP and The Gilberts and Minor Mishap, caught this video of us play “Come and Dance” by the Stooges Brass Band.

Wednesday, March 9
On to Dallas, and a great show, put on by Parade of Flesh at Good Records, with Bare Wires, and Hardin Steady and the Ready to Go. After the show, we sang karaoke at an awesome bar called the goat, with Lance, Brandon and Andrew, who showed us a swell time. John from Parade of Flesh loved it! So did this kid:

Thursday, March 10
Super Happy Fun Land is a great place, but not many people made it out to the show. However, we did essentially get a private show from Vockah Redu and the Cru.

Friday, March 11
Honk! TX kicked off for us with an appearance at a homeless shelter in Austin called ARCH. Good work to the organizers for incorporating some community performances! We performed later that night to a rowdy crowd at the East Side Drive-In, where we nearly killed John by underestimating our own pyrotechnics.

Saturday, March 12
Honk! TX continued with performances near UT; the festival continued the next day, but we had to get home. We made sure to end big, with water by day and more fire by night (photos by RJ Izzo).

Good Night 2010. WHAT A YEAR!

We are now on hiatus for 2010; this was an amazing year for us. To our fans and friends; to everyone who’s fed us or put us up (or put up with us), THANK YOU! You made this all possible:

We turned 5 years old!

Anchor Brain Records re-released our previously self-released debut, We Blow You Suck. 75 or less loved it!

In April, the New York Times reviewed our live show, calling us “Thrillingly competent with undimmable energy…an explosion of good
 cheer.”

The Boston Phoenix called us one of the 50 best emerging bands in the country.

We played at the Newport Folk Festival. SPIN said “They never actually took a stage but Providence, RI’s What Cheer? dominated Folk Fest like a headliner.”

We toured Spain, France and Italy, taking first prize at the Haizetara Street Music International Contest in Basque Country:

We’ll be announcing 2011 tour dates soon!
