On Saturday Jan 16th, from 6pm-4am, it’s Golden Festival! For the price of admission (not cheap, but worth every penny!), you get over 40 Balkan-related bands on multiple stages, as well as unlimited beer and food. And closing out the night, at the very end of the night, will be yours truly, What Cheer? Brigade. It’s way up at 207th street…. More info here: http://www.zlatneuste.org/GFsched10.htm
WARNING: This event usually sells out, so get there early (last year they closed the doors at 9, but then reopened them later) and / or buy your tickets online in advance (and you get a discount — no stupid “handling fees” either).
Even if you don’t live in NYC, this is worth a special trip. Aside from our annual recess show at an elementary school, Golden Festival is the best recurring event we do every year, and some people in the band have even said it’s consistently the best musical event they’ve ever attended, period. Where else will you dance ecstatically to brass bands, with a goofy smile on your face, surrounded by hundreds of aging hippies, Macedonian teenagers, prancing 6-year-olds, and beautiful young New York musicians?
